Death of former band president Joe Sheils

Joe Sheils (RIP)
Joe Sheils began his banding career learning the trombone in the Drogheda Brass & Reed Band.

During the mid-1950s, a combination of need for new instruments and lack of funds almost put the band out of existence, and Joe decided to forego his musical ambitions to concentrate on committee work.

New beginners' class starts this month

The multi-award-winning Drogheda Brass Band is recruiting for a new class of beginner students.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to read and play music in a fun group setting.

The band has a fantastic facility at East Coast Business Park that is the envy of bands around the country.

Under conductor John Carpenter, the band finishes its summer/autumn series of concerts when it entertains the crowds at the Oldbridge Harvest Fair on Sunday 25 September.

The local group is now recruiting for its school of music, established in the 1980s.

We want YOU to join our brilliant school of music and take part in fun competitions, perform grade exams through the renowned Royal School of Music join our highly successful Drogheda Youth Brass.

Open-air recital in Slane's village place

Drogheda Brass Band continues its autumn series of outdoor performances with a great new addition to the calendar.

The band is booked to play at Slane's village place - where the giant mural of Francis Ledwidge is displayed - on Sunday 12th September next from 2-4pm.

It's the second in a series of performances that has the band back playing to audiences.

The first took place on Sunday 29th August outside the band's premises at East Coast Business Park, when the band played to an audience of family and friends for a couple of hours in an event tagged as Brass Brunch.

Band thrilled with fifth place finish in online contest

Drogheda Brass Band members were delighted to find out on Monday afternoon that the band had finished fifth of 12 competing bands in the Kapitol Cory Online Championships 2021 1st Section.

The contest has been ongoing for three weekends throughout the month of March and reached a thrilling conclusion on Sunday night (28th) with the final bands from the championship section ahead of the much-anticipated results announcement.

From the archives: Yellow Submarine at Oldbridge

We've been delving into the archives on our YouTube channel (don't forget to like and subscribe!) this week and here's the first of those offerings.

Alan Catherall’s fun arrangement of Yellow Submarine was originally a concept piece arranged for the Liverpool Philharmonic.

The melody sits on top of a Souza-type march and features lots of bells and whistles – lots of fun for both players and audience.

Here's our version from one of our stints at Oldbridge House in August 2017.
